WWF-India's interventions

WWF-India and its partners are working in the landscape to help the forest department in conserving the Protected Areas and also secure critical corridors in these landscapes: Some of the strategies for addressing the issues mentioned above are :
Species Survey and Monitoring
For assessing status of some species like the Nilgiri tahr and also to establish baselines on prey and predator community (in addition to tigers)

Community Engagement
To work with communities to mitigate Human Wildlife Conflict, reduce dependency on fuelwood and also facilitate sustainable use of natural resources especially medicinal plants.

Supporting anti-poaching infrastructure
Developing an improved anti-poaching network by building new camps, repairing and maintaining existing camps and providing extra facilities for existing camps.

Enhancing communication systems
Improving the wireless communication network in critical areas in the landscape through building repeater stations that enable enhanced coverage.

Developing informer networks
Facilitating improved informer networks and also aid in sting operations by the Forest Department to improve crime detection and prevention. Institutionalize mechanisms for developing and managing informer networks so that the current ad hoc approach is eliminated and information gathering is optimized.

Training and capacity building
Through a collaborative arrangement with an existing training institution within the landscape to ensure consistency and sustainability.

Improving legal processes
Improve prosecution rate of offenders through capacity building, providing legal help and facilitating interstate coordination in prosecution of known offenders.

Inter-state collaboration
Facilitate meetings at the highest level between the three states to bring about effective and coordinated anti-poaching, prosecution of offenders and information sharing.

Advocacy and public support
Communicating the training, anti-poaching activities, community based work and other wildlife management activities of the department to the public through the media.
