VoW for the tiger!

The tiger is in the limelight this year. With campaigns rallying for him, and this year being named after the tiger, this gentleman is finally getting the much deserved support from the common public. The ‘Save Our Tigers’ campaign has successfully made the common man realize his role and responsibility in protecting the tiger. A large no. of individuals across India have stepped up and shown their support in whichever way they can.

Driven by passion for wildlife and a “go-getter” by nature, Richa Nara of Gurgaon (NCR) couldn’t just watch the on-going campaigns from the sidelines. Her concern for the decreasing number of tigers urged her to take action and make a meaningful contribution towards tiger conservation. She started a movement on Facebook, contacting complete strangers with a plea to join the cause and spread the word across all strata of the society. This medium was perfect for communication as hundreds of people saw eye to eye with her.

Together the group collected people to hold an awareness campaign on 14th February simultaneously in Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Kolkata and Chennai. The campaign’s aim was to highlight the pressing concern that tigers are an endangered species. They stressed on the importance of the tigers presence in our forests to maintain ecological balance. The awareness programs were a huge success in all states, as the adrenaline charged volunteers pledged to continue fighting for the tiger.

What started as an idea in Richa’s mind is today a group of 310 dedicated volunteers, who call themselves Voice of Wild (VoW). They are operating in various states with a mission to “Save Wildlife, Save Forest, Save Earth”. They are a self sponsored group, tying up with various NGOs working in this field, contacting activists and environmental experts for guidance for their next steps. The have educated themselves on the history of tiger conservation, and learning from past mistakes, are now identifying key areas where they can assist NGO’s by supplying volunteers, funds etc.

They are all ordinary people with regular jobs, yet they find the time to work towards this pressing issue everyday. They have taken the first step, which each one of us can take. This is an inspiring tale of the power of one voice to make a difference. A tale that encourage others to join the roar to save our tigers.
