PA Support
To enhance the management capabilities, WWF-India initiated a programme – PA Support, to support PAs (Protected Areas) having a sizeable population of tigers and its prey species. The Tiger Conservation Programme (TCP) was launched in the 1990s to secure the areas where populations of tigers survived. These areas were mainly the designated PAs - National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries, and Tiger Reserves.
Owing to a number of reasons many of these areas, even today, are not adequately equipped to ensure proper protection to forest and wildlife. The main requirement of the PAs are mobility for patrolling, uniforms for the staff, camping facilities, communication equipment, training, staff welfare etc. While a part of this requirement is met by the Government, the gaps are being filled to some extent by NGOs including WWF-India.
On the basis of an assessment, a support package is offered to the State Government. WWF-India’s support is initiated only after receiving approvals from the concerned State Forest Departments. The support mainly consists of vehicles, communication equipment, field gear, staff welfare, funds for intelligence, water harvesting structures etc.

In the beginning, seven protected areas well-known for their tiger presence- Corbett Tiger Reserve (TR), Dudhwa TR, Palamau TR, Manas TR, Kaziranga NP, Bandhavgarh TR and Periyar TR, were provided support. This number steadily increased and till date 55 PAs have been supported, many of them repeatedly.
