Mitigation
Global energy use and supply – the main drivers of GHG emissions – is projected to continue to grow, especially as developing countries such as India continue on an economic growth path which is energy intensive. According to IPCC Fourth Assessment Report on Mitigation, if there is no change in the energy policies, the energy mix supplied to run the global economy in the 2025–30 timeframe will essentially remain unchanged, with more than 80% of energy supply based on fossil fuels with consequent implications for GHG emissions. Not only this will mean that by 2030 project energy related CO2 emissions will be 40–110% higher than in 2000, it also projects that two thirds to three quarters of this increase will originate from non-Annex I countries such as India. A key challenge therefore is to elucidate steps for mitigating or avoiding climate change. Mitigation implies implementing policies of technological change and substitution to reduce GHG emissions and enhance sinks.
WWF-India’s People’s Power Campaign (PPC) programme on Mitigation focuses on Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management. The objective of the PPC is to exert regulatory pressure on electricity distribution utilities to invest in renewable and more efficient energy production and distribution processes. WWF-India has been engaging with the consumers through Residence Welfare Associations (RWAs) and Small Scale Industries Associations in showcasing benefits of voluntary demand side energy efficiency implementation. Working with North Delhi Power Limited (NDPL) in New Delhi, WWF-India by October 2007 has covered RWAs in eight of the twelve districts served by NDPL.
