Timber Trade & Forest certification

The demand for forest based products, particularly wood and fiber has increased many folds in the last few decades. It is estimated that the demand for timber is likely to grow from 58 million cubic metres in 2005 to 153 million cubic meters in 2020 in India. The supply of timber is mainly from forest plantations and wood production is showing a negative growth rate. In the absence of adequate supply from domestic sources, the nation has to depend heavily on imports to meet its demand for timber. This will increase the nation’s forest footprint.

WWF support credible forest certification such as FSC as a tool to promote responsible sourcing of forest products and timber trade in the country.

In order to promote credible forest certification, WWF advocates a ‘step wise approach’. Based on experience, we have developed a suitable methods and tool kits which can be applied by the forest and plantation managers, processors and traders.

Thorugh GFTN-India, we promote credible forest certification such as FSC and facilitate effective market linkages to promote sustainable forestry.

Products carrying the FSC label are independently certified to assure consumers that they come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations.
