Environment and Development

The goal of the Living Ganga Programme is to develop and implement strategies for sustainable energy and water resources management within the Ganga basin.

Introduction
WWF’s Environment and Development Programme has been set up to provide strategic guidance and promote action towards sustainable development in the face of threats to the environment and depleting natural resources. Under this programme, WWF has partnered with HSBC (Hongkong Shanghai Banking Corporation) to work towards reducing the impacts of climate change on people and livelihoods. The project intends to develop a framework for sustainable water and energy management in critical parts of the Ganga Basin focusing on river restoration, community education and engagement, business and government involvement, and biodiversity conservation projects.

Key objectives:
  • Develop and promote approaches for sustainable water resources management including environmental flows, which conserve biodiversity and support livelihoods
  • Develop and implement Pollution abatement strategies, demonstrating benefits for key stakeholders
  • Promote and advocate measures for water and energy co-management in agriculture, urban and industrial sectors.
  • Influence Government, public and private sector towards sustainable hydropower development.
  • Determine vulnerability of people, livelihoods and biodiversity to prioritize adaptation strategies.
  • Develop and implement communication strategies that create awareness and mobilize action by key stakeholders
