Climate Change on a train!

Through HSBC's sponsored coach on Science Express, WWF-India's Living Ganga Programme is showcasing its work on this special train that is running across the country. The train was flagged off on October 2, 2009 and will run until April 27, 2010 covering over 50 towns.

Agony of Ganges - an award--winning documentary supported by the Living Ganga Programme is part of the audio-visual experience in the HSBC coach.

The exhibition primarily targets high school and college students, encouraging them to pursue careers in science. Further, it strives to take modern research out of the lab and reveal just how relevant science is to everyday life. To learn more about the Science Express, please visit: www.sciencexpress.in.

Produced by Iqbal Malhotra of AIM Television and directed by Sudhesh Unniraman, the documentary won top honor at the Inkafest Mountain Film Festival where it won the best film award. The documentary is also available in Hindi as Dard-e-Ganga.
 

Second Stakeholder Consultation held on October 16, 2009

Second Stakeholder Consultation held
The second stakeholder consultation for the review of the activities in the city of Kanpur under WWF-India's Living Ganga Programme was held in Kanpur Nagar Nigam , Kanpur on September 16, 2009. The progress on the activities under the work components water energy comanagement and pollution abatement was discussed during the meeting. ICLEI South Asia's team presented the findings of the detailed water and energy audit of the waste water and sewage pumping stations in Kanpur city. There was discussion on the scaling up of the bioremediation for the treatment of domestic sewage.

April 2009

A field visit to Kanpur was organised in the first week of April to understand the water and sewage treatment facilities. This visit was a precursor before the pilot process of bio-remediation work will be commenced in the Kalyanpur-Singhpur Nullah.

Living Ganga Programme under HSBC Climate Partnership partly sponsored Indian Institute of Technology - Roorkee's annual festival Cognizance which was organised from March 22-25, 2009 at the sprawling campus of IIT. The festival attracted over 5000 engineering students from India and abroad was based on the theme of "Think Energy Go Green". Dr. Suresh K Rohilla, Director - Environment and Development, and Team Leader - Living Ganga Programme under HSBC Climate Partnership, was the Guest of Honour at the inauguration ceremony.

February 2009

A methodology workshop on Maintaining Sustainable Flows in River Ganga was organised at Indian Institute of Kanpur in the second week of February which saw participation from experts involved in the sustainable flows component of Living Ganga Programme. The workshop was inaugurated by Mr. P.K. Pandey, Municipal Commissioner, and presided over by Dr. Sejal Worah, Programme Director, WWF-India. 
Club of Lucknow's Annual Meet
WWF-India's Living Ganga Programme under HSBC Climate Partnership supported Club of Lucknow's Annual Meet which was organised on March 7 at the PIC-UP Auditorium. The theme of the programme was “Environmental Issues and Solutions with People Public Participation” and was inaugurated by the Chief Secretary of the Government of Uttar Pradesh.

  • Team Leader- Living Ganga Programme delivered a lecture titled “Developing and Implementing Pollution Abatement Strategies” at the Seminar on the "Role of Environmental Technologies and Partnerships in Waste Management" organised by the Department of Environmental Science (DES), School for Environmental Sciences, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow on January 05, 2009.
  • Team Leader- Living Ganga Programme made a presentation on the Framework for sustainable water and energy management in the River Ganga basin in wake of climate change (WWF India’s Living Ganga Programme (2007-2011) - Approach and Implications) during the International Conference On Climate Change - Impacts and Responses organized by the Common Grounds USA at Bharati Vidyapeeth Institute of Environment Education and Research, Pune from 09-11 January, 2009.  
  • Team Leader- Living Ganga Programme made a presentation on the “Potential effects of climate change on the Flow of Ganga” during the “CMS VATAVARAN - Environment and Wildlife Travelling Film Festival” at Lucknow on January 16, 2009.

December 2008

  • Objective Setting Workshop for developing a methodology for estimating environmental flows for Ganga Basin was held at WWF-India during December 03-04, 2008. The workshop was coordinated by Prof. Jay O’Keeffe, UNESCO-IHE, Delft. Prior to the Workshop field visits were conducted in two selected stretches in the Upper Ganga River Basin. Specialists from Academic Institutions, Civil Society Organisations and Government Departments participated in the field visits and objective setting workshop. 
  • Field visit to Narora both upstream and downstream part of the critical stretch- Specialists of various working groups– hydrology (including geomorphology, hydraulics), water quality, biodiversity (including riverine ecology, macro invertebrates) and socio-economic formed for the Objective Setting Workshop. 
  • Final report on the “Analysis of Stretch of the River Ganga from Gangotri to Kanpur for Homogeneous Zoning” submitted. The desk study divides the select stretch into seven homogeneous zones based on satellite interpretation and overlay of information available to guide the objective setting process.
  • Background paper "Maintaining Sustainable Flows in River Ganga” for identifying issues of concerns to be addressed for maintaining sustainable flows in River Ganga completed and submitted to WWF- India .
  • Walk through audit of the ICLEI South Asia team to Kanpur City for the Sewage & Effluent Pumping Stations of Kanpur City and the report has been submitted to WWF-India.
