Biodiversity conservation in the Khangchendzonga Landscape

Sikkim Programme Office as a part of WWF-India’s Eastern Himalaya Programme is working towards conservation and management of forests, species and fresh water habitats of Sikkim in collaboration with different government (Forest, Environment and Wildlife Management Department) and non government organizations (The Mountain Institute, Khangchendzonga Conservation Committee and Sikkim Development Foundation). Threat to the major wildlife habitats of Sikkim has been identified and the GIS map for the same is under preparation. Biodiversity conservation strategy document is being developed for the Khangchendzonga Landscape with the inputs from different stakeholders.

The programme has helped forest and wildlife department for organizing training programme for capacity building of the staff for controlling wildlife trade, formulating the work plan for conservation of large mammals, preparation of guidelines for lake conservation, tracking rules, bird conservation guidelines. Partnership with Indian Army has also been established in the current year.

A report on ‘People’s opinion on the impacts of ban on grazing in Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary, Sikkim, India has been brought forward by the programme.
