Cultivation of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants in Western Himalaya

The project aims to promote organic cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants in Uttarkashi District of Uttaranchal for income generation and sustainable development. The project is being implemented in collaboration with “Nature and People”. The nursery developed in the village Ranadi, Hitandu and Matholi for cultivation of three medicinal plants viz., Coleus barbatus, Rauvolfia serpentine, Pelargonium graveolens was provided with 1,05,500 planting stock and 75,000 were distributed among the farmers of the three villages. Training programme for the farmers on cultivation techniques was organized. An external review of the project by an official of G. B. Pant Agriculture University revealed that survival of the stock plants varied from 10-80 %. An internal review of the project found out that farmers are enthusiastic about cultivation of medical plants but are equally apprehensive about the market and marketing procedures. An exposure visit for the farmers to jadi booti mandi at Rishikesh would be organized to introduce them to the intricacies of the marketing of these plants.
