After completion of the study of the traditional grazing area management system of Monpa community settled at Thembang village, in this phase of this project supported by Dept. of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, as recommended by experts, promotion of cultivation of Fodder species among local villagers were taken up. Initially four species of Fodder – Oat Kent, Gunie Grass, Rye Grass and Alphalpha, seeds of which were procured from Uttaranchal Livestock Development Board, were distributed for the first time among interested five farmers.
Of the four species tried, production of Oat were found to be satisfactory and farmers have got two harvest of Oat which were sold to National research Centre on Yak (ICAR), Dirang, through the CCA Management Committee of Thembang. The Committee purchased all the harvest at the rate of Rs.0.80/kg from the villagers and then sold out to NRC on Yak with profit of Rs.0.20/kg to generate core grant of the Committee.
Encouraged by the outcome of the initial intervention and due to CCA Management Committee started operating as a facilitating agency for the villagers for marketing, later 21 farmers from three different villages have expressed their interest to take up summer fodder cultivation and 100kg African Tall variety of Maize and 20kg local variety of maize have been distributed among the interested farmers for cultivation. So far the villagers have sold 18000kg green fodder to NRC on Yak through the Management Committee.
