Species conservation within WWF-India began in 1997 with the initiation of the Tiger Conservation Programme. Subsequently in June 2000, it diversified into conservation programmes targeted at Asian Elephant and Rhino.

The projects on Tiger, Elephant and Rhinos are presently being operated under the banner of Tiger and Wildlife Programme. The programme focuses mainly on threats to wildlife and the issues surrounding these threats, the prominent ones being poaching, human-wildlife conflict, trade in wildlife parts, habitat destruction, legal support, etc.

The activities of these project are being carried out at field level as well as policy levels, and mainly related to scientific information gathering, working with the local communities, working with local NGO's, government agencies along with the state forest departments.
