WWF-India felicitates Dr Ramana Athreya


At a function organized by Wildlife Preservation Society of India, Dehradun and WWF-India at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun on May 11, 2007, Dr Ramana Athreya was felicitated for discovering a new species of bird - Bugun Liocichla (Liocichla bugunorum) at Eagle Nest Wildlife Sanctuary, Arunachal Pradesh.

On the occasion, Mr.Ravi Singh, Secretary General and CEO, WWF- India addressed the gathering. Mr.A S Negi, Executive Vice-President, WPSI, Dehradun and Mr.P R Sinha, Director, WII, Dehradun were also present at the function. Later a presentation was given by Dr Athreya on the discovery of Bugun Liocichla and the conservation initiatives being carried out in western Arunachal Pradesh.

Dr Athreya is a graduate from IIT- Kanpur, a radio astronomer of international standing and an ardent bird watcher. He had gone to the Eagle Nest Wildlife Sanctuary in West Kameng for a short holiday with his wife. On 25th May, 2006, he spotted a cuddly new bird - ‘Bugun Liocichla’. It has shades of red, black, flaming orange, yellow, brown, olive, grey, white, flesh pink and silver which are deftly interwoven into a matrix, the ultimate in colour harmony. It is just 2 mm bigger than the familiar Red- vented Bulbul.
