WWF-India’s statement on the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s Independence speech on the eve of 60th Independence of India

As it may have been inadequately reported, WWF would like to highlight that the Independence Day speech by Dr. Man Mohan Singh, Honourable Prime Minister of India, was a very supportive and encouraging statement for country’s wildlife and environment.

Reproduced below are the excerpts of the speech:

“In protecting our environment let us recall Mahatma Gandhi’s wise words that nature has given us enough for everyone’s need, but not for everyone’s greed. The Himalayas are part of our inheritance. Many of our rivers flow from them. We must protect our glaciers; we must keep our rivers clean and must increase our forest cover. Every citizen must ensure that our wildlife, especially endangered species like tigers, lions and elephants are preserved for the benefit of future generations. Keeping India green and clean should be a national and an individual obsession.

Each one of us must be aware of how what we do impacts on nature and our climate. People across the world are increasingly concerned about global warming. And so must we be. We must be economical in our consumption of fuels and energy. This we owe humanity and to posterity.” Source: PIB

WWF-India is deeply appreciative of Prime Minister’s concern for natural resources of India and it's reaching out to individuals with directness and action. The speech connects the concern for global climate change issues and the compact of each citizen with conservation. The result and impact of such a direction is in the long term and the goals of this direction are highly valued by us. WWF-India is encouraged by this continuing statement of the Prime Minister and looks forward to further action on the ground.
