Andhra Pradesh State office of WWF-India organised a two-day nature camp in Papikonda Wildlife sanctuary near Polavaram as part of National Wildlife Week Celebrations.
About Papikonda Sanctuary:
The sanctuary is spread over three districts, viz: East Godavari, Khammam and West Godavari and extends over 591 sq km. The sanctuary and its vicinities in the Eastern Ghats, including Rampachodavaram, our base camp have varied and multifarious streams emanating from covers of the hill make the Papikonda forest vegetation luxuriant. Animals such as Tigers, Gaurs, Panthers, Spotted Deer, Four Horned Antelope, Sambar, Hyena, Jackals, Sloth Bear, and several species of birds and reptiles inhabit the Eastern Ghats around Rampachodavaram. Konda Reddys, Konda Doras, Koyas and Nayakpods are the primitive tribal groups inhabiting this region since eons. Unfortunately, this biologically and anthropologically well-endowed landscape is threatened by catastrophe through development activities.
Camp highlights:
• Participation of WWF-India trained tribals in camp management
• First camp organised as part of eco tourism programme initiated by Forest Department, Kakinada
• Tented accommodation in the middle of the forest, near stream bank at Velamuru
• Nature guidance by tribals.
