WWF-India celebrates World Migratory Bird Day in Ladakh
WWF-India celebrated Ladakh World Migratory Bird Day 2007 with great enthusiasm at its Field Office in Ladakh. The celebration marked by two events – a drawing and painting competition and a symposium was well attended by students, their parents and dignitaries.
The drawing and painting competition based on the theme “Migratory Birds and Their Habitat” saw participation from 146 students from different educational institutions of Ladakh who beautifully painted various migratory birds and their habitats. While the symposium on the topic “Migratory Birds in a Changing Climate” saw participation from symposium 25 students and was attended by about 700 students.
On the occasion, chief guest, Mr. Tsering Dorjay, Chairman and Chief Executive Councilor of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council appreciated the students for participating in the event. At the same time he expressed his deep concern about various adverse impacts of climate change in Ladakh. He shared some of his personal experiences on climate change in high altitude areas like Ladakh. He also thanked WWF for organizing such an educative event in Ladakh.
In the same function a special poster “Migratory Birds Signaling Climate Change Warning from Himalayas” prepared by WWF and Department of Wildlife Protection was also released. The function concluded with the prize distribution to the winners of Symposium and painting competition by the Chief Guest.
