Meet the Team

Pemba Tshering Bhutia

His team mates call him the backbone of their project; the local communities know him more as a friend; and, his smiling face leaves a lasting impression on anyone who meets him once.

Pemba Tshering Bhutia has been a part of WWF-India’s Project SERVE team in Darjeeling since 2003. After graduation in Commerce he realized his passion to work for environment and wildlife conservation. He works in the capacity of a Project Officer and is responsible for community development and habitat restoration. His calm and friendly demeanor has made him a favorite with the local communities of the area, which makes it easy for him engage them in alternative livelihood activities like organic farming, mushroom cultivation and honey harvesting. Villagers attend the environment awareness programmes organized by him with great enthusiasm.

Sanjeeb Pradhan, Sr. Project Officer, SERVE, and Pemba’s team mate has these words of appreciation for Pemba’s work, “Pemba takes his work with the communities very personally. In the field, he is more a community person than part of our project team. He knows the villagers personally, makes sure he remembers their anniversaries and birthdays, and is a part of their celebrations and sorrows. That’s what makes him so good at engaging the communities. I have never seen him loose his cool dealing with the pressures that come with a job like this.”

Apart from community engagement, Pemba also looks after habitat restoration work, which involves organizing plantations during the monsoon season. He maintains the nurseries containing saplings of native species. Looking back at his journey in conservation, Pemba, a true Buddhist at heart, says “WWF-India is my second home, and my team is my second family. It gives me immense satisfaction to work with these communities and by being aware of the fact that my work helps improve their lifestyle, apart from directly contributing to environment conservation. I wish more people would realize the importance of conserving our natural resources and opt to make a difference in this field.”

He lives in Darjeeling with his wife and two daughters.
