WWF-India's Interventions
WWF-India has piloted various conservation projects to enable the blending of conservation with sustainable development.
WWFis conducting research on human-wildlife conflict to understand its causes and identifying possible locations for installing solar lights to mitigate this, as better lighting would help wild animals identify human settlements and keep away. WWF is working locally towards alleviating threats to species through livelihood-based conservation initiatives and human behavioural change (for example, preventing retaliatory killing of wild animals or killing of strayed animals for meat). It is also controlling estuarine biodiversity loss caused by the collection of shrimp seeds from watercourses of the Sundarbans to cater to aquafarms.
In addition, WWF has launched the Climate Adaptation Programme in Mousuni Island to observe and study the impacts of climate change and to introduce adaptation strategies to cope with it. The Mousuni Climate Adaptation Centre was established to improve disaster response and management, safeguard communities against climate disasters, and provide them with climate adaptive livelihood options.
WWF is also taking initiatives for habitat conservation of the tiger, the key species of the Sundarbans, through its Species Conservation and Sustainable Development Programme. The objective is to reduce pressure on the tiger habitat by improving livelihood of the local people and promoting sustainable development in the Sundarbans.
The Plantation Programme (fuel wood and fruit trees) was undertaken with selected families in Tipligheri and Kishorimohanpur Villages for reducing their dependency on the forest (for fuel) and to create assets for the poor. Identification of livelihood options for each selected household, as well as, feasibility study for the opted livelihood options have been completed for three villages.
Furthermore, the Climate Witness Project was launched in the Sundarbans to record first-hand accounts of climate change by the local people for a better understanding of climate impacts to help in policy change and advocacy.
