WWF-India’s interventions
From the past over one decade WWF-India in collaboration with the Department of Wildlife Protection, J&K has been working towards conservation of high altitude wetlands of Ladakh region. Under this initiative Black-necked Crane has been identified as a priority species for conservation. Scientific studies especially on the status and breeding productivity of the species have been conducted and a regular database on the species for the last 10 years has been established. Regular education and awareness activities for the protection of the species are being conducted for various stakeholders like Local Communities, Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Tourists and Tour Operators. Local educational institutions and local youth are also being involved for the long term conservation of the species. WWF field office in Arunachal Pradesh is working for the conservation of the small wintering population in Sangti valley and Zimithang Valley of Arunachal Pradesh in India. At the regional level WWF is planning to use this species as a tool for high altitude wetland conservation in Tibetan Plateau and as a vehicle for International Cooperation between India, China and Bhutan.
