Species conservation within WWF-India began in 1997 with the initiation of the Tiger Conservation Programme.

Species conservation within WWF-India began in 1997 with the initiation of the Tiger Conservation Programme. Subsequently in June 2000, it diversified into conservation programmes targeted at Asian Elephant and Rhino.

The projects on Tiger, Elephant and Rhinos are presently being operated under the banner of Tiger and Wildlife Programme. The programme focuses mainly on threats to wildlife and the issues surrounding these threats, the prominent ones being poaching, human-wildlife conflict, trade in wildlife parts, habitat destruction, legal support, etc. 

The activities of these project are being carried out at field level as well as policy levels, and mainly related to scientific information gathering, working with the local communities, working with local NGO's, government agencies along with the state forest departments.

WWF-India has partnered with Aircel, one of India's leading telecommunications companies in the launch of 'Save our tigers' media campaign. The campaign was  launched on Saturday, 30 Jan 2010, across the nation simultaneously on TV, on-line, in print as well as on radio featuring India's cricket captain MS Dhoni, ace footballer Bhaichung Bhutia, Tamil movie star Suriya and ‘Stripey’ a tiger cub.

WWF-India strengthens patrolling of Assam’s wilderness during winter

Assam state is home to diverse habitats that harbor a rich variety of wildlife, but the same urgently need enhanced protection. The conservation issues here are being addressed by WWF-India through landscapes approach under the North Bank Landscape (NBL) and Kaziranga-Karbi Anglong Landscape (KKL) programmes, in partnership with the Forest Department, Government of Assam and various NGOs.
