World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF)- India’s Assam and Arunachal Pradesh offices had organized an inter school State level “Wild Wisdom Quiz” on the occasion of Wildlife Week celebration at Handique Girls College Guwahati on 6th October. Wildlife Week is celebrated every year through different activities in the country in the first week of October to promote the cause of conservation of Wildlife and Forests. WWF-India in association with TRAFFIC-India, an wildlife trade monitoring network has been conducting Wild Wisdom Quiz in all most all the states of India and the winning team from each state go to the National level mega Quiz that is held at New Delhi. The main objective for organizing the competition was to inspire, educate and empower the young minds of students on environment and wildlife.
10 teams from premier schools of the city - Army Public School,Narangi, Guwahati, Delhi Public School, Guwahati, Sanskriti-the Gurukul,Guwahati, Maharishi Vidyamandir- Silpukhuri, Maria’s Public School, Guwahati, Mont fort School, Guwahati, South Point School, Guwahati Srimanta Shankar Academy, Modern High School, Railway’s H.S.School Guwahati participated in the event. Mr.R.K.Das, Associate Professor and HOD Economics, Handique Girls’ College conducted the quizzing rounds.
Dr. Surajit Baruah , State Coordinator, WWF-India, Assam & Arunachal Pradesh State Office welcomed the participating teams from different schools to the competition and stressed the need of participation in such competition to augment the knowledge of students on nature and wildlife .
The first three winning teams are Mr.Kaustav Kaushik & Mr.Kaustav Moni Mazumdar of Army Public School, Guwahati, Mr.Ashirbad Gogoi & Mr.Rajdeep Sarma, of Delhi Public School, Guwahati, and Mr Arunav Saha & Mr.Niladri Suvra Choudhury of Sanskriti the Gurukul. The first winning team from Army Public School Guwahati will represent the state in the National Level Wild Wisdom Quiz organized by WWF-India to be held at New Delhi on 12th November.
Dr.(Mrs.) Indira Bardoloi Principal ,Handique Girls’ College lauded the efforts and initiatives of civil society organizations for promoting conservation of nature and wildlife in collaboration with academic institutions of the state. As part of Wildlife Week celebration a Special Lecture on ‘Forest Resources of Assam’ was also organized by the Handique Girls’College Science Society and WWF-India, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh State Office on 5th October in the college. Mr Ritesh Bhattacharjee (IFS) Director, State Forest School, delivered the presentation. Mr.Bhattacharjee spoke about the history of the forest and wildlife conservation in the state in pre-colonial and post- colonial times. An essay Competition on various aspects of Wildlife and Environment was also organized among the students. Ms Rimjim Choudhury, Ms Songaiwan Ahaonao and Ms Jahnabi Goswami of Handique Girls’ College got the first, second and third prize respectively.
