How do we transform markets?

Over-fishing, deforestation, species loss, pollution, water scarcity and climate change are critical environmental challenges linked to the production and consumption of key commodities.

WWF recognizes the important role that business and industry play in the global production, consumption and trade of commodities. WWF focuses its efforts around key commodities that most impact the planet's critical regions for biodiversity conservation and those that contribute to humanity’s footprint.

WWF-India is working towards transforming the market by engaging with large retailers, manufacturers, traders and investors, to promote efficient and responsible consumption, production and trade of key commodities. The work is aimed to influence major market players to gradually move from risk mitigation and regulatory compliance to proactively developing sustainable strategies that promote positive environmental stewardship

Engaging companies

Globally, WWF has identified 100 companies who can drive major change in global commodity markets. About three-quarters have taken the first steps toward better sourcing by joining a multi-stakeholder roundtable, publishing time-bound targets to purchase credibly certified commodities, or both. This shows significant progress from five years ago, when less than a quarter had taken any public action.

In India, WWF has been working with a network of processors, importers, producers, retailers and financiers to improve the way business is conducted.  Commodity specific engagements can be seen here:

What WWF is doing to work with businesses:

By 2050 the human population will exceed 10 billion and meeting the increased consumption needs on the same resource base will require intensification of production and the widespread adoption of sustainable practices across the global economy.
