Himachal Pradesh

These are the efforts that WWF is making to conserve high altitude lakes in the state of Himachal Pradesh: 

Chandertal

  • A preliminary management action plan has been prepared and is under review
  • WWF-India will depute volunteers from local villages to regulate tourism
  • A check post will be established to obtain an entry fee from tourists
  • A detailed study has been planned in order to determine the current status of the lake and the impact of tourism on it
  • Various education and awareness programmes with a special focus on high altitude wetlands are being run
  • Local Gaddis are being involved in the conservation of the lake

Nako

  • Initiatives are being taken to involve local communities in the conservation of the lake
  • It has been decided to create a Wetland Conservation Committee, which would take initiatives to mitigate the adverse impacts of tourism
  • A detailed study has been planned to learn the present status of the lake and the impact of tourism on it
  • Various education and awareness programmes are being regularly conducted in the area
