National Environment Awareness Campaign

WWF- India, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh State Office in association with the North East Biotechnological Association (NEBA) and the All Assam Women Literary Association, Guwahati University organized an awareness programme on Climate Change under the National Environment Awareness Campaign (NEAC). The day started with a tree plantation programme with more than 100 tree saplings planted at various locations in the University campus.

An awareness meeting chaired by Prof Soneswar Sharma, President NEBA was organized where Dr. Surajit Baruah, State Coordinator, WWF-India expressed his concerns about the growing environmental problems affecting the ecological balance. All sections of the society especially the women were appealed to spread awareness on the critical environmental problems.

Prof K.G Bhattacharyya, Director, UGC Academic Staff College delivered a presentation on the natural and man made causes of climate change. Prof Aparna Bujarbaruah, Retd Head, Dept of Botany, Cotton College, Guwahati spoke about the rich biodiversity of North East and its vulnerabilities to Climate Change.

Sharing his experiences on conservation and plantation in the state, Mr M. S. Manivanan IAS, Managing Director of Assam Financial Corporation called for involvement by the local communities and common people in the major conservation initiatives.
